DEQ, Governor's Office Under EPA Scrutiny

In November, 2007, Dow Chemical reported to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) a dioxin concentration of 1.6 million parts per trillion (ppt) in river-bottom sediment adjacent Wickes Park, in Saginaw, MI.  This represents the most concentrated amount of dioxins in the Saginaw River since testing began in 1978 and is the single highest level of dioxin ever reported to the EPA.  The highest level previously found in the Saginaw River measured much less, at 32,000ppt.

Update on Wild & Scenic River Lawsuit

In 2001, Northwoods Wilderness Recovery, Center for Biological Diversity and Superior Wilderness Action Network first filed a lawsuit against the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests for not implementing management plans for 9 of the 11 Wild and Scenic Rivers under their jurisdiction.

Boise, ID—The Center for Biological Diversity, Northwoods Wilderness Recovery, and more than 50 other local and national conservation groups released Wild At Heart, a report today condemning the Bush administration’s plan to open the door to development of Idaho’s roadless backcountry forests.   This public land is currently protected under the Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

Lawsuit: Kennecott Flambeau Mine Violating Wisconsin Law

Madison, Wisconsin—The Wisconsin Resources Protection Council (WRPC) announced today at a press conference in the State Capitol Building that it intends to file a lawsuit against the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and Kennecott’s Flambeau Mining Company (FMC). The lawsuit would be in response to ongoing water pollution that violates Wisconsin law and the Federal Clean Water Act at the Flambeau Mine, in Rusk County, unless the pollution and related issues are fully addressed within 30 days.
