This project monitors timber sales in the Hiawatha, Huron-Manistee, and Ottawa National Forests. Most people believe that their National Forests are protected from road development and logging. Unfortunately this is not the case, in fact your National Forests have over 373,000 miles of roads. According to Mike Dombeck, former Forest Service Chief, 60 percent of these roads are below the level of environmental and safety standard that they were designed for. Every year the number of roads in your forests increase, fragmenting the delicate ecosystems within them. Also, the Forest Service continually pushes for subsidized logging. In just the Ottawa National Forest around 66 million board feet of lumber is sold every year. This unnecessary logging actually looses money. Taxpayers pay over 1 billion dollars every year so their forests can be logged and destroyed. We work with Heartwood, Superior Wilderness Action Network, and Wildlaw to appeal and litigate many of these sales. We also conduct workshops for train ng activists to become involved in National Forest issues. We need your help to stop the Forest Service from destroying your forests. Please Volunteer!
